Jamia Millia Islamia is a public Central University in Jamia Nagar, New Delhi. It was founded in 1920 at Aligarh in the United Provinces, moved to Karol Bagh in Delhi in 1925 and was later built up at Jamia Nagar. In 1988 it became a Central University by an Act of Parliament.
The university was the result of the efforts of its founders – Shaikhul Hind Maulana Mahmud Hasan, Maulana Muhammad Ali Jauhar, Hakim Ajmal Khan, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad Ansari, Jenab Abdul Majeed Khwaja and Dr Zakir Husain. It began as a movement for education and cultural renaissance against the colonial regime, founded to promote patriotism and national integration.
Jamia is accredited A++ grade by NAAC, awarded in the second cycle in December 2021, and was ranked 4th in the University category in the NIRF India Rankings 2025. It is an ensemble of a multi-layered educational system covering schooling, undergraduate and postgraduate education, with faculties in Sciences, Life Sciences, Social Sciences, Engineering & Technology, Education, Humanities & Languages, Architecture & Ekistics, Fine Arts, Law, Dentistry and Management Studies, alongside the well-known AJK Mass Communication Research Centre and over thirty research centres.
