Aligarh Muslim University at a glance
Aligarh Muslim University is a public Central University and an Institution of National Importance under the Seventh Schedule, Article 246 of the Indian Constitution. It was established in 1920 and evolved out of the Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College, set up on 7 January 1877 by the visionary and social reformer Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. From its inception it has kept its doors open to members of all communities, from every corner of the country and the world.
Spread over 467.6 hectares in the city of Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, AMU offers more than 300 courses across the traditional and modern branches of education. The university has 13 faculties comprising 117 teaching departments, 3 academies and 21 centres and institutes, with roughly 39,000 students and about 1,700 teachers. It draws students from every state in India and from abroad, particularly Africa, West Asia and Southeast Asia, and reserves seats in some courses for students from SAARC and Commonwealth countries.
AMU is accredited by NAAC with a CGPA of 3.35 on the four point scale at “A+” grade. In the NIRF India Rankings 2024 it was placed among the top ten Indian universities, at 8th as a University and 16th Overall, and it secured 3rd position in the MDRA India Today University Rankings 2025.
A defining feature of the university is its residential character, with most staff and students living on campus across 19 halls of residence and 80 hostels. Alongside conventional undergraduate and postgraduate study in the sciences, social sciences and humanities, AMU offers specialised and professional education through the Zakir Husain College of Engineering and Technology, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Dr Ziauddin Ahmad Dental College, Ajmal Khan Tibbiya College, the Women's College and the Institute of Ophthalmology.
