Frequently asked questions

Psychology is the scientific study of behaviour, thinking and emotion. Psychologists study psychology, usually to the master's level or beyond, and work through assessment, therapy and counselling. Psychiatrists are medical doctors (MBBS followed by an MD in Psychiatry) who can diagnose illness and prescribe medicines.

Many universities admit students from any stream to BA Psychology, while some ask for Science subjects or Psychology for BSc programmes. Rules differ by university and course, so check the prospectus and the CUET subject list of the university you want.

The core subjects are similar. A BSc usually adds more statistics, biological psychology and laboratory work, while a BA is more social-science oriented. Under NEP 2020, many universities offer a 3-year degree or a 4-year Honours degree, and the Honours route is preferred for clinical psychology training.

A typical route is a 4-year psychology degree (or a Bachelor in Clinical Psychology), then a 2-year RCI-recognised master's such as M.Clin.Psy (earlier an M.Phil in Clinical Psychology), followed by registration with the Rehabilitation Council of India. This takes about 6 years after Class 12. Check the institute's current RCI recognition and eligibility.

Clinical psychologists must be registered with the Central Rehabilitation Register of the Rehabilitation Council of India. There is no single national licence for counsellors or other psychologists, so requirements depend on the employer and, in some cases, the state. The Mental Healthcare Act, 2017 recognises clinical psychologists as mental health professionals.

A clinical psychologist assesses and treats mental health problems through therapy and psychological tests and is RCI-registered. A counsellor supports people with everyday life, career and relationship concerns. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can prescribe medicines.

Many central and state universities use CUET (UG) for BA and BSc Psychology and CUET (PG) for MA and MSc Psychology. Other universities run their own tests or admit on merit, and NIMHANS conducts its own entrance test for its clinical psychology programmes. Check the notice of each university.

You can study a master's in psychology, clinical or counselling psychology, or related fields such as HR, social work and education. Some roles such as research assistant, HR executive or counselling assistant are open to graduates, but practising as a psychologist usually needs a master's and the right registration.

Psychology graduates work in hospitals and mental health centres, schools and colleges, corporate HR and training, NGOs and the social sector, forensic and correctional services, research and teaching. Roles, pay and requirements vary by employer, city and experience.

A PhD is needed for university teaching and research careers, and is useful for advanced clinical or specialised roles. Many practising counsellors and clinical psychologists stop at a master's or M.Phil/M.Clin.Psy, and RCI-recognised training is what matters for clinical practice.

Each country has its own licensing rules and often asks for additional degrees, supervised hours and exams. An Indian degree may need to be evaluated by the licensing body of the country, so check the requirements of the country you plan to work in.

Clinical psychology focuses on assessing and treating mental disorders and needs RCI-recognised training and registration. Counselling psychology focuses on guidance and support for everyday difficulties and has no single licence. Choose according to the work you want, and check the recognition status of the programme.
