About IIT Delhi

IIT Delhi at a glance

The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi is one of the twenty-three IITs created to be Centres of Excellence for training, research and development in science, engineering and technology in India. Established as the College of Engineering in 1961, it was declared an Institution of National Importance under the Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 1963 and renamed “Indian Institute of Technology Delhi”. It was then accorded the status of a Deemed University with powers to decide its own academic policy, conduct its own examinations and award its own degrees.

The campus sits at Hauz Khas in South Delhi. Since its inception more than 60,000 students have graduated from IIT Delhi across Engineering, Physical Sciences, Management and Humanities & Social Sciences — nearly 5,070 of them with Ph.D. degrees and over 15,738 with a B.Tech. The institute is an autonomous statutory organisation, and admission to its undergraduate programmes is through JEE Advanced.
