MD Anatomy Course : Eligibility, NEET-PG, INI-CET and Scope

In short: MD Anatomy is a 3-year postgraduate degree after MBBS. It is a pre-clinical branch with no patient care, focused on teaching and research. You get in through NEET-PG (MCC and state counselling), or through INI-CET for AIIMS, PGIMER, JIPMER, NIMHANS and SCTIMST.

About the Course
Under the NMC - PG Medical Education Regulations 2023, you study gross anatomy, neuroanatomy, embryology, histology, radiological anatomy and body preservation. You also learn teaching skills and complete a research thesis.
Eligibility
- MBBS from an NMC-recognised institution.
- Valid provisional or permanent registration with NMC or a State Medical Council.
- NEET-PG qualifying marks (or INI-CET qualifying percentile for INI seats).
- NEET-PG has no upper age limit.
- Foreign medical graduates must clear FMGE, complete the required internship and hold registration, as per current NMC rules.
Entrance Exams and Routes
- NEET-PG (NBEMS): the only entrance for MD/MS seats in government, private and deemed colleges. No state or private college can hold its own separate test.
- INI-CET (AIIMS New Delhi): for AIIMS, PGIMER, JIPMER, NIMHANS and SCTIMST. It is held twice a year.
- State quota: after the Supreme Court verdict of 29 January 2025, domicile-based reservation in state-quota PG medical seats is not allowed. Apart from a reasonable number of institution-based seats, state-quota seats go strictly by NEET-PG merit. Rules differ by state, so read your state specific counselling notice.
- Direct or lateral entry: not available.

How Hard Is It to Get a Seat?
Pre-clinical and para-clinical branches close at much higher rank numbers than clinical ones. In 2025 All India Quota counselling, MD Anatomy had the highest General-category closing rank among branches offered in five or more colleges, at about AIR 1.88 lakh across all rounds(see MCC for official figures). Closing ranks vary a lot by college, quota and round, so shortlist colleges using the latest MCC and state data.
Career and Scope
Most MD Anatomy graduates become medical faculty, moving from Assistant Professor to Professor under the NMC Faculty Regulations 2025. Other options include research, medical education and simulation labs, radiological and clinical anatomy, and body-donation and cadaver programmes.
Competition for faculty posts is real. NMC rules also allow M.Sc. and Ph.D. holders to fill up to 30% of posts in Anatomy departments.
Is it right for you? It suits you if you enjoy teaching, dissection and research. Think twice if you want clinical practice, procedures or high private-practice income. Your MBBS registration stays valid, but MD Anatomy mainly leads to academic work.
Fees: Government colleges charge low fees and pay a monthly stipend. Private and deemed colleges can charge far more. Fees, stipend and service bonds differ by state and college, so check each counselling brochure.
