Overview
M.S. Physics (Master of Science (M.S.) in Physics) is a 2-year postgraduate programme in Physics. It deepens the study of classical and quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, optics, electronics and modern physics, with advanced practicals and a dissertation.
Course Details
- Level: Postgraduate (PG)
- Duration: 2 years
M.S. Physics is a 2-year programme. Confirm the structure with the institute.
Eligibility
A BSc (Honours) or BSc degree in the subject or a closely related subject, with the marks set by the university. Under NEP 2020 a 4-year bachelor's can lead to a 1-year master's.
Admission
Admission is through CUET (PG) for many central and state universities, IIT JAM for M.Sc programmes at IITs, IISc and NITs, and university or institute tests or merit elsewhere. Check each university's notice.
Registration & Recognition
There is no statutory licence for science graduates. Teaching and research roles follow their own rules: school teaching needs a B.Ed and the relevant eligibility test, college and university faculty need a master's degree with UGC NET or SET (or a PhD), and research posts go through national or university selection tests.
What You Will Learn
The programme covers classical and quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, optics, electronics and modern physics, with practical work.
Career Options
Graduates can work as physicist or research assistant, teacher or lecturer, data and electronics roles, or researcher in national laboratories. Roles, pay and requirements vary by employer, city and experience.
After This Course
You can move on to a PhD (with CSIR-UGC NET JRF or INSPIRE where eligible), teaching and research roles, or specialised jobs in industry and government laboratories.
Good to Know
M.S. is offered by a few institutes as a research-oriented master's, separate from the M.Sc.
